Sun 13 Apr, 2014
Firefighters rescued a man from a flat this morning after he was trapped by a fire which broke out near the front door.
Three crews from Aylesbury Fire Station were called to the fire, in Gainsborough Road, Aylesbury, shortly before 4.30am.
Watch Manager Steve Cook said: "When we arrived, the man was calling from a window on the upper floor. Thick smoke was blocking his only means of escape and the front door was on fire."
The man was helped down a ladder from a first-floor window and taken to hospital suffering from the effects of breathing in smoke.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus put out the fire with a hose reel and cleared away the smoke with a fan. They also rescued a cat from inside the flat.
The flat was 10 per cent damaged by fire and 100 per cent damaged by smoke. There was also smoke damage to adjacent properties.
Firefighters are planning to return to the area this evening to provide reassurance and fire safety messages to local residents.
The cause of the fire is being investigated.
