Spring 2017 edition of Safety Centre newsletter now out

Fri 10 Feb, 2017

The spring 2017 edition of Newsflash, the newsletter of the Safety Centre in Milton Keynes, is out now (you can open a PDF here).

It includes a report and pictures following the opening of a new road safety scenario, and an appeal for volunteers.

Newsflash is produced with help from Buckinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service, as part of the organisation’s support for the Kiln Farm-based charity.

The Safety Centre – also known as Hazard Alley – is a purpose-built interactive education facility for children. It was opened in 1994 and is run by a board of trustees, which includes Area Commander Julian Parsons, Buckinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service's Head of Service Delivery.

The Safety Centre has established itself as a ‘must do’ for schools seeking innovative ways of introducing children to elements of the National Curriculum, such as peer pressure, bullying, vandalism and personal safety. Since it opened, more than 400,000 children have visited it.

They learn about:

  • Fire safety
  • Home safety
  • Road safety
  • Water safety
  • Building site safety
  • Railway safety
  • Fuel station and in-car safety
  • Personal safety
  • Internet and chatroom safety
  • Farm safety
  • First aid and the recovery position
  • Shoplifting, crime and the consequences
  • Vandalism
  • Drug awareness

The Safety Centre provides follow-up lessons for many of these topics. It also runs home safety sessions for parents, and a number of first aid courses.
