FBU demonstration: Chief Fire Officer's statement

Tue 9 Dec, 2014

Statement from Mark Jones, Chief Fire Officer, Buckinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service, in response to media questions about today's demonstration in Aylesbury by the Fire Brigades Union:

“We note today’s demonstration and the anger expressed by the Fire Brigades Union and its supporters.

“Although the demonstration was colourful and, seemingly, a useful distraction for the FBU leadership from the real issues of the dispute, it has made no difference whatsoever to the situation within Buckinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service.

“The FBU has announced its intention to take legal action against Buckinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service, apparently to establish the legality of its previous strike notification. It seems that they had taken this view prior to today’s demonstration, causing me to doubt what the demonstration was supposed to be for.

“As a result of the FBU’s announcement of legal proceedings, Buckinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service will make no more comments upon the strike or related actions. Now that it is clear that this will be dealt with through the courts, no amount of local actions, demonstrations or abuse on social media will do anything to affect the outcomes of those legal proceedings.

“I sincerely hope that the FBU will start to represent our firefighters on the matters in dispute soon so that a resolution can be achieved.”
