Fire at block of flats under construction

Fri 28 Nov, 2014

A fire broke out this afternoon at a building site in Bowling Green Close, to the rear of Bletchley Leisure Centre in Princes Way.

Firefighters from Bletchley, Great Holm and Broughton were called to the incident shortly before 3pm, along with a turntable ladder from Northamptonshire.

The building is a four-storey concrete block of flats under construction. As crews arrived, smoke was issuing from the second floor. Firefightes wearing breathing apparatus used main jets to contain the fire to the first and second floors. The fire is believed to have started in the cavity insulation.

Station Manager Nick Honor, who also attended the incident, said: “Crews worked well to prevent further fire escalation to other floors, and are expected to maintain a presence at the incident overnight on a watching brief.

"This will include taking temperature readings and acting on the findings. A further assessment will be taken in the morning."

The fire caused minimal damage. One window and an amount of insulation had to be removed.

Firefighters carried out reinspections at the site at 10pm, midnight, 3am and 6am.
