Motorcycle safety campaign – March 2021

Five organisations team up for Ride Safe initiative

Ride Safe motorcycle campaign 2021

The three fire and rescue services across the Thames Valley – Buckinghamshire, Royal Berkshire and Oxfordshire – are working in partnership on a motorcycle safety campaign during March.

Entitled Ride Safe, the campaign will engage with local riders to highlight key messages, including the importance of bike maintenance and the wearing of the proper riding kit. Riders will also be encouraged to brush up their riding skills at a time when many may be returning to riding after a winter break.

Covid restrictions allowing, representatives from the fire and rescue services will visit local motorbike shops and meeting places around the region to engage with riders. Special Ride Safe posters will be put up along favourite riding routes during the campaign, and key messages will be featured on the Biker Down Thames Valley Facebook page (see link below).

All three fire and rescue services already work together to provide the award-winning Biker Down collision management and first aid course for local riders, with hundreds of people taking the course in the last few years.

Other partner organisations will be supporting the campaign, including Thames Valley Police, Buckinghamshire Council and advanced motorcycle riding groups.

Keith Wheeler, Buckinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service’s Road Safety Officer, said: ‘Motorcyclists are over-represented in collision and casualty statistics, both locally and nationally.

“With increasing numbers of people taking to two wheels, our aim is to encourage our local riders to do all they can to ride safe.”
