Beacons

Safety tips for anyone considering organising a celebratory beacon lighting.

In 1977, 2002, 2012 and 2022 beacons were lit to celebrate the Silver, Golden, Diamond and Platinum Jubilees.

There are four types of beacons which can be lit for historic occasions:

  • A free-standing beacon fuelled by bottle gas
  • A beacon brazier with a metal shield.
  • A bonfire beacon
  • A Bishops Frome strawman

If you are organising a beacon lighting:

What TO Do

  • Obtain the landowners’ permission
  • Locate bonfire beacons at least 60m away from buildings, roads, railways and public rights of way
  • Avoid overhead power lines
  • Construct a safety barrier
  • Liaise with the local authority licensing officer about necessary permission

What NOT to do

  • Do not light beacons in strong winds
  • Do not use lighting fluid or accelerant on a lit beacon
  • Do not leave a lit beacon unattended
