Flexible Shifts, Competitive Pay, and the Opportunity to Serve Your Community

Are you ready to make a difference in your community while enjoying a rewarding career with flexibility and work-life balance? Buckinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service (BFRS) is now recruiting firefighters, and one of the exciting options we offer is the Day-Crewed Shift Pattern

What Makes Day-Crewing Special?

  • At selected stations like Buckingham, Newport Pagnell, and Amersham, the Day-Crewed Shift Pattern combines daytime shifts at the fire station with on-call availability during the evening, from the comfort of your home or other suitable accommodation. This unique arrangement provides:
  • Flexibility: Every other weekend completely free from duty, giving you quality time for family, hobbies, or relaxation.
  • Work-Life Balance: A predictable schedule that blends hands-on fire and rescue service with the ability to be at home during on-call hours.
  • Supportive Housing & Allowance Options: For those living further from the station, housing options and allowances are available to make day-crewing a viable choice.

Attractive Financial Benefits

In addition to base salaries, day-crewing comes with a range of financial perks:

  • Housing Allowance Uplift: Over the past two years, we have made significant investments to enhance housing allowances for day-crewing staff, with a 30% increase in April 2023 and an additional 5% in July 2023. These changes reflect our commitment to supporting our team and making this shift pattern more sustainable.
  • Duty Payment: Earn an extra 5% of your base salary for being On-Call from home at night, plus payments for incidents attended during these hours.
  • Competitive Salary Package: A competent firefighter at a day-crewing station can earn up to £47,749.91 annually (correct as of the 6 December 2025). However, the actual earnings can exceed this amount. Every time a firefighter is called to an incident during their on-call hours, they receive additional payments, including a turnout fee, disturbance fee, and pay for the positive hours worked. These extra payments can significantly increase their overall income.

Subject to Operational Needs

Day-crewing shifts are designed to balance the needs of our firefighters with the demands of the service. While assignments are determined by operational requirements, these shifts provide an excellent work-life balance, combining daytime work at the station with on-call availability from home in the evenings. Housing options are also available for those living farther from the station.
