Operational Exposures – SNOMED Codes

Firefighters may be exposed to a range of contaminants during the course of their working live. Unfortunately, current evidence can suggest that this may, in some cases, be associated with an increased risk of certain types of cancer. One way to support your health is by ensuring that relevant occupational information is accurately recorded on your NHS health record.

All NHS care settings in England use SNOMED-CT (Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine – Clinical Terms). This is a standardised clinical vocabulary used within electronic health records to collate information clearly and consistently, including details about your occupation and potential occupational exposures.

Why does this matter?

Firefighters experience more unique workplace exposures than the general population, and as such, may be at risk of developing certain cancers at a younger age. Recording relevant occupational information on your NHS health record helps ensure your GP has a complete picture of your working background when discussing any health concerns, helping contribute towards a more effective treatment plan if required.

What you can do

You may wish to contact your GP surgery to ask whether the following SNOMED-CT terms can be added to your electronic health record:

  • Firefighter – SNOMED CT code: 106382009
  • Occupational exposure to toxic agents – SNOMED CT code: 16090571000119109

Some GP practices may still use older systems where these specific codes are not available. In these cases, the practice should still be able to record equivalent terms describing your occupation and occupational exposure.

Being aware of symptoms

Cancer Research UK provides guidance on possible signs and symptoms of cancer. You do not need to memorise these, but it is important to be aware of changes in your health. If something does not feel normal for you, it is important to speak to your GP.
