Recruitment launched for next Chief Fire Officer

The recruitment process for our next Chief Fire Officer (CFO) and Chief Executive has now launched, following the announcement that our current CFO Louise Harrison will leave the role in spring 2027.

Buckinghamshire & Milton Keynes Fire Authority (BMFA) has appointed executive search specialists GatenbySanderson to support a fair and competitive recruitment process and attract the best possible candidates for this important role.

Planning for the future

BMFA are planning ahead to ensure sufficient time for recruitment, appointment and onboarding arrangements associated with a role of this significance. Information about the recruitment process, including key dates, is available in the candidate information pack.

Subject to the outcome of the recruitment process and approval by BMFA Members, it is anticipated that a preferred candidate could be confirmed in an Extraordinary Meeting of the Fire Authority in December 2026.

The role

As our most senior leadership role, the Chief Fire Officer and Chief Executive is responsible for leading our Service, supporting our people and helping shape how we continue to protect communities across Buckinghamshire and Milton Keynes.

The recruitment process is open and competitive, with applications welcomed from suitably qualified candidates both internally and externally. All applicants will be assessed through a robust selection process designed to identify the person best placed to lead our organisation into the future.

Llew Monger, Chair of Buckinghamshire and Milton Keynes Fire Authority shared;

“We are seeking a Chief Fire Officer / Chief Executive who can lead with integrity, humility and confidence. The successful candidate will continue to build a positive organisational culture where everyone feels valued, respected and able to perform at their best.

They will champion inclusion, wellbeing and professional standards while maintaining an unwavering focus on public safety and operational excellence. The environment in which Fire and Rescue Services operate continues to evolve. Financial pressures, changing community risks, technological advancement and increasing public expectations require innovative and courageous leadership.”

Continuing to serve our communities

There will be no immediate change to our leadership arrangements. Louise will remain in post and continue to lead the organisation throughout the recruitment process. During this time, our focus remains unchanged: keeping our communities safe through prevention, protection and emergency response activities, supported by the dedicated operational and support staff who serve Buckinghamshire and Milton Keynes every day.
