Home Fire Safety Services

We are committed to keeping you and your loved ones safe from fire hazards.

Here at BFRS, we offer two valuable free services: the Online Home Fire Safety Check and In-Person Home Fire Safety Visits, designed to ensure your home is as safe as possible.

Online Home Fire Safety Check

Our easy-to-use Online Home Fire Safety Check (OHFSC) provides personalised advice tailored to your home. Completing the short questionnaire (around 15 minutes) will give you immediate guidance on improving your fire safety, covering areas such as:

  • Smoke alarms
  • Escape planning
  • Identifying potential fire hazards

If the check highlights a higher risk in your home, you may be eligible for an in-person Home Fire Safety Visit. In such cases, you’ll be prompted to provide your contact details, enabling our team to contact you to explain more about the visit and arrange a convenient date and time.

Completing the Form for Someone Else

You can complete the Online Home Fire Safety Check for a family member, friend, or someone you support. However, you must have their consent before doing so.

If You Can't Complete the Online Form

If you’re unable to complete the form, contact us by phone or email:

  • Phone: 01296 744477
  • Email: referrals@bucksfire.gov.uk

Our team will discuss your situation and, if eligible, book a Home Fire Safety Visit for you.

In-Person Home Fire Safety Visits

A Home Fire Safety Visit (HFSV) offers tailored fire safety advice for those at greater risk. During the visit, a member of our team will assess your home and provide guidance on:

  • Smoke detection and escape planning
  • Candle and cooking fire safety
  • Electrical safety
  • Fireplace and heater safety
  • Clutter and hoarding
  • Smoking-related fire safety
  • Safety advice related to medical equipment, such as oxygen, air-flow mattresses, or medicines

We can also provide signposting or referrals for additional support, including:

  • Sensory equipment
  • Cold homes
  • Falls risk prevention

When is a Home Fire Safety Visit Appropriate?

A visit may be appropriate if:

  • Your home has increased fire risks, such as:
    • Hoarded materials or clutter
    • Overcrowded living arrangements
    • Burn marks, evidence of previous fires, or overloaded electrical devices
  • There are no working smoke alarms, and you cannot replace them yourself.
  • You’re unsure if your smoke alarms are working and cannot replace them yourself.
  • You’re unable to respond to a smoke alarm quickly due to:
    • A long-term disability or health need
    • Medication, drugs, or alcohol
    • Mobility challenges or frailty

If you or someone you know is aged 80 or above, we encouraged to contact us for a visit. Please ensure you have their consent before making a referral.

Rented Properties

Landlords are responsible for providing working smoke alarms at the start of a tenancy and replacing them when necessary. However, Home Fire Safety Visits can still be requested, as the advice given focuses on the people living in the property, not just the smoke alarms.

Alarms for People Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing

If you are deaf or hard of hearing and may not hear a standard smoke alarm, we can refer you (with your consent) to:

  • Bucks Vision (Buckinghamshire Council)
  • Sensory Advice Resource Centre (Milton Keynes City Council)

These organisations will arrange a hearing assessment and provide specialist smoke alarm systems suited to your needs.

Home Fire Safety Visit Postcards

In addition to pre-arranged visits, our crews may schedule area-specific visits. If we’re planning to visit your area, you may receive a postcard in advance. These postcards will look like this:
