Meet Carrie-Anne

“As National Apprenticeship Week unfolds, it’s the perfect time to reflect on my own journey as an apprentice. I never imagined when I first started at Buckingham Fire & Rescue service that this opportunity would lead me to where I am today.
I began my journey in the Protection department, undertaking an apprenticeship in Business Administration. At that stage in my life, I knew I needed a new challenge, but I wasn’t sure where to begin. As a single parent I had previously worked in jobs where the hours fitted in with looking after my son and I got stuck in a bit of a rut.
Starting my apprenticeship at the age of 42 was a turning point. Honestly, I never thought apprenticeships were an option for someone my age. I believed they were mainly for younger people between 16-25 years. It’s been an incredible journey of growth, challenges and amazing opportunities that have shaped me both professionally and personally. I had no idea just how much this opportunity would change my life.
Throughout my apprenticeship, I was encouraged and supported by the team and given the opportunity to take additional fire safety courses. I am incredibly grateful to be part of an organisation that invests in its staff. The support has been essential to my success
Five years later, I am proud to have progressed from an apprentice to my current job role as a Business Fire Safety Inspector. The journey has opened doors I never knew existed, and I’ve grown in ways I never anticipated.
What I’ve learnt most throughout this experience is that it is never too late to start something new. I would encourage anyone to go for it regardless of your age, and to consider an apprenticeship. Being an older apprentice has allowed me to bring life experiences into my role. The skills and opportunities it has brought me have been far beyond what I expected. My apprenticeship has truly been life- changing and I am excited for the future.”
