We’re proud to share that earlier this week (Monday 16 June), we hosted our first ever dedicated Open Day tailored for children and adults with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEN(D))—and it was nothing short of inspiring.
This event was held in collaboration with our blue light colleagues at Thames Valley Police and South Central Ambulance Service, the day was built around accessibility, inclusion, and celebration.
From sensory-friendly fire engine tours to quiet zones and interactive emergency service displays, every aspect of the event was designed with care and attention to create a safe, welcoming space for all visitors.
Families were able to meet our crews, ask questions at their own pace, and take a closer look at our equipment – building trust, sparking curiosity, and most importantly, creating smiles.

We even designed a specific bespoke ramp that allowed wheelchair access to our fire engine. A simple but powerful addition that received overwhelmingly positive feedback from attendees and carers. Thank you to our members of staff for going the extra mile to make this happen!
Danny Graham, Station Commander of West Ashland shared;
“I am incredibly proud of what this event achieved. It was more than just a day of activities – it was about building confidence, encouraging inclusion, and strengthening community connections.”
For us, connecting with every part of our community isn’t just important -it’s essential. Events like this go a long way in helping break down anxiety and barriers around emergency services. They allow us to learn directly from the people we serve and ensure that in times of need, every individual, regardless of ability, feels understood, seen, and supported.
We’re incredibly proud to have made this happen and we’re just getting started. It’s a journey we’re committed to walking, together. Thank you to all the families who joined us, to our staff on Blue Watch and volunteers who made the day possible, and to our partner emergency services for their brilliant support.
