Firefighter Victorious in Solo English Channel Swim Challenge

An update on Emma's swimming challenge

Our Firefighter Emma has successfully completed one of the world’s most demanding open water swimming challenges, crossing the English Channel solo in an incredible 14 hours and 23 minutes.

The achievement comes just one year after an earlier attempt ended close to the finish line. Emma didn’t let this stop her journey, she returned stronger, more determined and more focused than ever, turning a setback into an extraordinary success.

Widely regarded as one of the toughest open water swims in the world, crossing the English Channel requires months of dedicated training, exceptional physical endurance and immense mental resilience.

Preparation for the challenge began during the winter, with four pool training sessions each week focused on sprint work, technique, endurance and strength. Open water training followed in the spring, as Emma gradually adapted to colder temperatures and increased swimming distances. By May, she was completing six-hour swims in water temperatures of just 13°C to 14°C, before progressing to longer back-to-back sea swims to prepare for the conditions she would face in the Channel.

Reflecting on her achievement, she shared:

“We all carry dreams that can feel big, bold, and maybe even a little terrifying. As my tide inched ever closer the fear crept inside me. But that discomfort is all part of the journey.

Admitting your dreams can be scary, it makes them real. The only thing scarier is leaving your dreams unspoken, or never really chasing them at all. Failure is never getting to the start line.

So I would recommend you choose courage, you keep showing up when it’s uncomfortable, and you keep chasing the things that light your heart on fire even when the fear tries to pull you back. Your future self will thank you. Trust me.”

When asked how it feels to have completed the challenge, she added:

“To be honest it’s still sinking in. I keep thinking back to the disappointment of last year and I have to shake myself. All that pain can be put in a box and buried because I’ve done it.

I am a Channel Swimmer and I have the pebble to prove it! Not a lot of people can say that. I’m just a normal girl who dreamt big and now look at what I have managed to achieve.”

Emma’s achievement is a remarkable example of perseverance, determination and the power of never giving up on a goal, similar to the qualities she shows in her role as a Firefighter. Her successful crossing of the English Channel serves as an inspiration to anyone pursuing a challenge of their own.

Whilst training for the challenge, she has also been raising vital funds for the Fire Fighters Charity, if you are able to donate and support Emma’s cause please follow this link – Emma Kirkman is fundraising for Fire Fighters Charity

Congratulations to Emma on this outstanding accomplishment.
