Giving Old Workwear a New Purpose

Giving Old Workwear a New Purpose

You may remember earlier this year, our firefighters and uniformed staff received new workwear.

Over the past year we’ve been strengthening our brand identity so it better reflects who we are as a service. As part of this work, and following feedback from staff, our uniform has been updated to include better quality t- shirts, shirts, combat trousers and additional fleece layers. Our Service crest has also been added, to makes us instantly recognisable to the public.

We wanted to update you on what happened to workwear that was no longer in operational use. Rather than sending these items to landfill, we’ve taken a community focused approach, ensuring that every piece of clothing is reused, repurposed, or recycled wherever possible. Highlighting our commitment to sustainability.

Supporting Local Charities With Warm Clothing

A significant portion of the warmer workwear, such as joggers, pillows and sleeping bags has been donated to local charities across the county. These organisations support individuals and families when experiencing tough times, ensuring that good‑quality clothing continues to serve a meaningful purpose within our communities.

Donating Unused Workwear to Kenyan Firefighters

Some items, including shirts and trousers, have been donated to a fire service in Kenya. These garments, while no longer part of our current uniform specification, remain in excellent condition and can provide valuable support to firefighters working with limited resources. This donation forms part of our wider commitment to international collaboration.

Recycling Through FFC Clothing Bins

Remaining items have been responsibly recycled through FFC clothing banks, ensuring that textiles are diverted away from landfill and processed in an environmentally conscious way. This approach helps reduce waste, supports circular‑economy principles, and ensures that every item is handled with care and purpose.

Fire Fighter’s Charity, Regional Fundraiser, Nicky Young shared;

Fire Fighters Charity is incredibly grateful to Buckinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service for supporting us by recycling their everyday workwear through our clothing banks. Not only does this help reduce the amount of textile waste sent to landfill, but it also raises vital funds to support our work.

Last year alone, Buckinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service raised more than £20,000 through the recycling banks located at their stations – an outstanding achievement.

Did you know that every bag of unwanted clothing donated to one of our recycling banks helps make a real difference? Your donations directly support serving and retired firefighters, Control Room colleagues, support staff, and their loved ones across the UK fire services community.

The funds raised help us continue providing lifelong health and wellbeing support to those who dedicate their lives to protecting others, both during and after their service.

By recycling unwanted clothing, you’re helping to protect the environment, reduce waste and supporting the fire services community – a true win-win for everyone.

Group Commander Technical, Dave Tubbs shared;

Following the successful introduction of our new uniform, we have taken the opportunity to ensure that our previous clothing and equipment continues to provide value to others.

This initiative reflects our commitment to sustainability, responsible asset management, and community support; both locally and globally. We are pleased that our former uniform and equipment will continue to serve a meaningful purpose and make a positive difference.”
