Flammable décor and Flower walls

Flower walls, floral arches and artificial greenery displays are becoming a common feature at events, in shops and across hospitality venues. They’re eye-catching and great for creating a certain look or atmosphere, but they’re not always risk-free when it comes to fire safety.

Why fire safety matters

Many decorative installations, particularly artificial flowers and backings, are made from combustible materials such as plastics, foams, or treated fabrics. If ignited, they can burn rapidly and produce large amounts of smoke, increasing the risk to occupants and making evacuation more difficult.

Floral décor and flower walls are often used in busy environments such as weddings, parties, retail displays, and public venues. These spaces can become crowded, and visibility may be reduced depending on lighting and layout.

Common fire risks

Most fire risks linked to floral décor and flower walls include:

  • Use of highly flammable materials, especially untreated artificial flowers, foam backboards, or dried natural materials.
  • Placement near heat sources such as candles, heaters, lights, or electrical equipment.
  • Electrical faults from integrated lighting within displays.
  • Obstruction of escape routes or exits by large decorative installations.
  • Lack of fire-retardant treatment or certification for decorative materials.

What venues and organisers must do

If you are responsible for a venue, event space, or installation, you must:

  • Carry out a Fire Risk Assessment and include all decorative elements.
  • Ensure floral displays and walls are made from fire-retardant or treated materials where possible.
  • Keep decorations away from ignition sources such as open flames and electrical equipment.
  • Maintain clear and unobstructed escape routes at all times.
  • Ensure any integrated lighting is safely installed and regularly checked.
  • Review fire safety arrangements when installing temporary or seasonal décor.

Floral décor can make a space look great, but it should never come at the expense of safety. With the right materials, careful placement, and proper planning, the risks can be easily managed. Taking a few simple precautions can make a big difference in keeping everyone safe whether you’re hosting an event, running a business, or just enjoying the space.
