Last Friday, we welcomed colleagues from across emergency services partner agencies and members of our Fire Authority to attend two dedicated Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) awareness sessions, designed to showcase the specialist capabilities, tools, and skillsets that support our operational response.
Held at our headquarters in Aylesbury, the sessions provided a valuable opportunity for attendees to gain deeper insight into the advanced techniques and resources our teams deploy during complex incidents, from technical rescue and hazardous materials response to building collapses, and natural disasters.

Enhancing Collaboration Across Agencies
The sessions were attended by representatives from our Fire Authority, neighbouring Fire and Police Services and other blue light partners, with a shared goal of improving mutual understanding. Through live working at height demonstrations, equipment displays, and scenario-based discussions, they were invited to explore how our USAR teams operate, learn about the kit our crews use, and how joint working can be strengthened in real-world emergencies. They even got to meet our USAR dogs Huw and Milo.

These sessions also allowed our own staff to engage directly with partner agencies, ask questions, and share experiences, highlighting the importance of collaboration in keeping communities safe. Truly making a difference together.
Station Commander USAR and Aylesbury Fire Station, Kevin Mercer shared;
“Bringing our partners together in this way helps build trust, understanding, and operational confidence. It’s vital that we continue to share knowledge and showcase the specialist capabilities that support our frontline crews.”
Looking Ahead
Following positive feedback, we hope there may be opportunities to host further awareness events in the future, continuing our commitment to build strong relationships.
Together, we’re better prepared and better connected to serve our communities.
