Watch Commander Takes on 100km Trail Run to Support Fire Fighters Charity

Our dedicated Watch Commander, Gavin, is preparing to take on a gruelling 100-kilometre trail run to raise vital funds for the Fire Fighters Charity in September.

Having begun his firefighting career as an on-call firefighter in 2002 before later becoming a wholetime firefighter, he has devoted more than two decades to serving his community. Now, he is taking on one of his toughest personal challenges yet in support of a charity that provides life-changing assistance to fire service personnel and their families.

The Fire Fighters Charity offers physical, mental and social wellbeing support to members of the UK fire and rescue community. For many firefighters, it provides invaluable help during difficult times, making it a cause that is particularly close to home.

To prepare for the demanding event, Gavin has followed a structured 16-week training programme built around six days of running each week, with a dedicated rest day. The plan includes a mixture of long-distance endurance runs, speed-focused sessions, recovery runs and varied pace work, all designed to build the stamina and resilience needed to complete a 100km trail course.

Balancing training with the demands of operational firefighting has required significant commitment. Many of the runs take place before day shifts, often beginning at 4am or 5am, ensuring the training is completed before the unpredictability of emergency calls and daily duties can impact the schedule.

As part of the preparation, he has also been training in warmer conditions to help acclimatise to different temperatures that may be experienced on the day. Alongside the running plan, his training includes regular strength and conditioning sessions, physical training exercises and stretching routines to improve performance, aid recovery and reduce the risk of injury.

Speaking about the challenge, Gavin shared;

“I’ve spent over 20 years serving my community, so it feels fitting to support a charity that spends every day supporting firefighters and their families. Setting myself new challenges is always something I enjoy, but knowing this one will help support fellow firefighters makes it even more meaningful.”

The 100km trail run will test both physical and mental endurance, but after months of early mornings, disciplined training and huge commitment, Gavin will be taking on the challenge for a cause that means a great deal to the firefighting community.
