Only call 999 in the event of an emergency

Thames Valley Fire Control Service is currently receiving a high number of 999 calls about bonfires, barbecues and other potential fire risks. While the weather remains hot and dry, and our firefighters continue to respond to outdoor fires across Buckinghamshire and Milton Keynes, we understand you may be concerned about the risk of fire.

Our dedicated control room staff are working hard to answer emergency calls and mobilise firefighters as quickly as possible. By only calling 999 in a genuine emergency, you can help keep lines free for those in urgent need of assistance

When to Call 999

If you do discover a fire, please get to a safe place and call 999 immediately. Provide as much information as to the location of the fire as you can to help our crews reach you as quickly as possible.

When Not to Call 999

We do not need reports of people having barbecues, unless there is a fire that is spreading, out of control or posing an immediate danger.

While we encourage everyone to act responsibly and be mindful of fire risks, 999 should only be used when there is an emergency.

How You Can Help

You can help reduce the risk of grass and wildfires by:

  • Disposing of cigarettes safely and never dropping them on the ground.
  • Taking litter home with you, as glass and metal can increase the risk of fire.
  • Avoiding barbecues and bonfires during periods of heightened fire risk.
  • Taking extra care when spending time outdoors.

By using 999 responsibly and taking simple precautions, you can help us protect our communities across Buckinghamshire and Milton Keynes, as well as our countryside and wildlife, while ensuring our emergency lines remain available for those who need us most.
