Safety tips for anyone considering organising a celebratory beacon lighting.

In 1977, 2002, 2012 and 2022 beacons were lit to celebrate the Silver, Golden, Diamond and Platinum Jubilees.

There are four types of beacons which can be lit for historic occasions:

If you are organising a beacon lighting:

Obtain the landowners’ permission
Locate bonfire beacons at least 60m away from buildings, roads, railways and public rights of way
Avoid overhead power lines
Construct a safety barrier
Liaise with the local authority licensing officer about necessary permission
