About this vacancy

As a Protection Team Leader, you will manage and support a team of Fire Safety Inspecting Officers, Advisors and Apprentices, with indirect oversight of administrative staff.

You will:

  • Co-ordinate fire safety activity within your office, including audits of all regulated premises, from businesses to complex high-risk residential buildings, in line with our risk-based inspection programme (RBIP).
  • Lead locally on the RBIP, statutory consultations, business engagement, and responses to complaints, while providing clear advice to dutyholders, building professionals, and partner agencies.
  • Be responsible for investigations into breaches of fire safety legislation, taking formal enforcement action where required, and guiding your team through the same.
  • Ensure audits and enforcement are carried out to a high standard, support firefighter safety through effective risk information gathering, and represent the Service in external meetings or court.
  • Play an active part in prevention and protection activities, business continuity advice, and training delivery, while developing your staff through appraisals, mentoring, and quality assurance.

Vacancy details

We are looking for someone who is:

  • A motivated and professional leader who demonstrates the Service’s values.
  • Committed to continuous development, you will act with integrity, safeguard health and safety, and handle information responsibly.
  • Confident in mentoring and supporting staff, making decisions, and contributing to departmental improvement.
  • Excellent in communicating, you will build strong relationships internally and externally, bringing professionalism, adaptability, and a clear focus on achieving safer outcomes for our communities and firefighter safety.
  • Permanent Contract
  • Full Time
  • 37 hours per week (non-operational) / 42 hours per week (operational)
  • Local Government Pension Scheme
  • Good annual leave entitlement
  • Employee benefit
  • Employee Assistance Programme
  • Occupational Health
  • Onsite gym facilities

We’re looking for someone who is flexible, professional, and dependable, with integrity and discretion at the core of their work.

This role is also open to Operational colleagues (Watch Commander level).

Our support roles are based on 37 hours per week, and Operational (Watch Commander) roles on 42 hours.

Once competent, the role offers an additional allowance to reflect the broader contribution Team Leaders make, up to 15% for Operational staff and up to 10% for those in Support roles. This allowance includes:

  • 5% for providing out-of-hours fire safety cover, ensuring consistent specialist advice where gaps exist in the flexi-duty rota.
  • 5% for supporting crews with training and business engagement activities.
  • 5% (Operational only) for completing 12 duty days per year to maintain operational competence. Support roles are capped at a 10% allowance and do not include the operational duty element. This approach strengthens support for operational colleagues and places Team Leaders at the heart of key decisions, making their contribution both visible and valued across the Service.
