Means Of Escape

A means of escape is a clear, unobstructed route that allows people to safely exit a building in the event of a fire or emergency. These routes typically include:

  • Corridors
  • Stairways
  • Emergency exits
  • Final exit doors leading to a place of safety

Escape routes must be easily accessible, well-lit, properly signed, and kept clear at all times.

The Problem with Excess Storage

Using corridors, stairwells, or plant rooms as makeshift storage areas is a serious fire safety risk. Excess storage can:

  • Block escape routes and prevent people from evacuating quickly
  • Fuel a fire, helping it spread faster
  • Block fire doors, preventing them from closing properly
  • Obstruct the work of firefighters entering the building

It’s easy for storage issues to build up over time, especially in busy workplaces or during seasonal peaks but even short-term blockages can have life-threatening consequences.

What Does the Law Say?

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, all non-domestic premises must have:

  • Adequate means of escape in case of fire
  • Clear routes that are free from obstruction at all times
  • Regular fire risk assessments to identify and manage hazards
  • Failure to comply can lead to enforcement action, prosecution, fines, or closure of your business.

 Best Practices for Your Business

To reduce the risk posed by excess storage and ensure safe means of escape:

  • Keep escape routes clear – No boxes, furniture, or equipment should be stored in corridors or stairwells.
  • Regularly review your fire risk assessment – Make sure it reflects current storage practices.
  • Train your staff – Ensure everyone knows the importance of keeping exits and escape routes unobstructed.
  • Use signage – Clearly mark fire exits and keep doors unlocked or on appropriate release mechanisms during working hours.
  • Limit combustible storage – Especially in escape routes or near electrical systems.
