Staying safe in nightclubs and late-night venues

Recently, you may have heard of some fires happening in busy, late-night venues like nightclubs, bars and pubs. Despite the recent incidents in the news occurring overseas, they highlight the risks that can exist anywhere, day or night.

At BFRS, our Protection (Fire Safety) Team work closely with local businesses and licencing partners to help minimise fire risks, which consequently helps keep members of our community safe when out enjoying themselves.

Why fire safety matters

Nightclubs are often dark, noisy, and on some nights, crowded, you may not always be familiar with the venue and layout.

When combining alcohol with fatigue, it can slow down your reactions. If a fire starts, you might be slow to notice, react differently and delayed in making your way out.

Common fire risks

Most serious nightclub fires are linked to:

  • Pyrotechnics, such as fireworks, theatrical effects, flares, and other controlled explosive or combustion-based effects designed for entertainment, signalling, or safety applications.
  • Electrical faults from lighting or sound systems.
  • Overcrowding.
  • Blocked or locked exits.
  • Flammable decorations and furnishings.

What venues must do

If you own a venue or are an operator, you must:

  • Carry out a Fire Risk Assessment and act upon the findings.
  • Keep all escape routes clear and unlocked.
  • Provide automatic fire detection, alarms, and emergency lighting.
  • Train your staff and contractors to manage emergencies.
  • Review fire safety if the venue layout or use changes.

What you can do

When you go out to a pub, club or bar you should:

  • Look for the emergency exits when you arrive.
  • Be aware of overcrowding.
  • Be aware of your own behaviours and actions.
  • Tell staff if something feels unsafe.
  • Follow staff safety instructions.
  • Leave immediately if there is fire or heavy smoke.

If you are concerned about a venue in Buckinghamshire or Milton Keynes and staff do not act, you can report it to our Protection (Fire Safety) Team by emailing FireSafetyEnquiries@bucksfire.gov.uk.
